A professor of marine biology at Tarbiat Modares University announced the discovery and global registration of a new fish species, which has been named "Persian Gulf" in honor of the place of its discovery.
According to Radio Salamat's public relations, Dr. Mohammad Sadeq Alavi Yeganeh, a professor of marine biology at Tarbiat Modares University, announced the identification and global registration of a new fish species on the "Cafe Khabar" program, referring to the importance of biodiversity in the Persian Gulf. This species, which was previously mistakenly identified as a species, has been introduced as an independent species through detailed morphological and genetic studies.
He said: This scientific project was carried out in the form of a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation and took about five years. Our genetic data showed that the group under study includes at least 9 different genetic classes.
Alavi Yeganeh added: "Using mitochondrial gene sequencing and morphometric techniques, we succeeded in identifying a new species and, in honor of the place of its discovery, we chose the scientific name Abu persicus for it, which is derived from the Latin name for the Persian Gulf."
He explained the process of global registration of this species: After the article was accepted in a specialized journal, the species information was transferred to the World Zoological Data Bank, and the chosen name was also approved by international scientific institutions.
Alavi Yeganeh also said about the conservation status of this species: Its reserves have not yet been assessed, but given the favorable conditions for other members of this family, there is likely to be no problem in terms of extinction.
Finally, he pointed out the nutritional value of this fish and said: "In the south of the country, local people recommend this fish for pregnant and lactating women. Of course, this belief requires scientific confirmation by nutritionists."
