The Center for Communicable Disease Management of the Ministry of Health has described the latest situation of cholera in the world, the region and Iran in its latest report.
According to the Public Relations of Radio Salamat and the announcement of Vedda, according to this report, during December 2025, a total of 17,327 new cases of cholera or acute watery diarrhea were reported from 16 countries, territories in 3 WHO regions, which is a 25% decrease compared to November.
The Eastern Mediterranean region recorded the highest number of cases (9,198 cases from 5 countries), followed by Africa (8,062 cases from 10 countries), Southeast Asia (67 cases from 1 country). No cases of infection were reported from the Western Pacific region and the Americas region.
In the Eastern Mediterranean region, a total of 9,198 new cases of cholera were reported from 5 countries, which is a 35% decrease compared to November. The highest number of cholera cases were reported from Afghanistan (6601 cases), Yemen (1521 cases) and Pakistan (704 cases).
From 1st of Farvardin to 30th of Azar 1404, a total of 314963 cases of acute watery diarrhea in the country were monitored and evaluated for the possibility of cholera, which is a 15% increase compared to the same period last year.
Stool cultures for Vibrio cholerae were performed for 162776 cases of patients with clinical signs of acute watery diarrhea. Of the total number of cases of acute watery diarrhea monitored, cholera was confirmed in 5 cases by laboratory methods, and laboratory confirmation in these 5 cases was by culture.
Based on field surveys conducted to identify the location of infection, 3 cases are classified as imported into the country and 2 cases as locally transmitted cholera within the country.
Local transmission of cholera occurred in Golestan University (1 case) and Ahvaz University (1 case), and imported cases occurred in Babol University (2 cases) and Tabriz University (1 case). The sex ratio of patients was 2:3 (2 female and 3 male). All patients were of Iranian nationality, 3 lived in rural areas and 2 in urban areas.
